PROFESSOR DILYS DERWENT
An 18th century Healer at St. Mungo's Hospital, after which a stint as headmistress of Hogwarts must have seemed fairly easy. One of Hogwart's most celebrated Heads

PROFESSOR ARMANDO DIPPET
Headmaster at Hogwarts School in the time of Tom Riddle, Armando breaks down from old German language into "Army or host" and mana or "man"

PROFESSOR ALBUS PERCIVAL WULFRIC BRIAN DUMBLEDORE
Attended Hogwarts, was in Gryffindor in his youth. He is between one hundred and fifty and one hundred and sixty. Transfiguration teacher during Tom Riddles time. Now headmaster at Hogwarts. Albus is Latin for white (indicating that he's on the side of light) and wisdom. Also Albion is an old name for Britain. Dumbledore is an old English word for bumblebee. JKR says that it seemed to suit the headmaster because one of his passions is music and she imagined him walking around humming to himself.

PROFESSOR EVARARD
A previous headmaster of Hogwarts. sallow-faced wizard with a short black fringe, one of the most celebrated Head at Hogwarts, his picture hangs in most wizarding institutions. From Old German ebur "boar"" and hardu "hard"

FIRENZE
A centaur in the Forbidden Forest young with white-blonde hair and a palomino body - Italian name for the city of Florence. Galileo Galilei who was buried in Firenze arguably the greatest astronomer who ever lived. This seems fairly appropriate for a stargazing centaur. He takes over from Sibyl Trelawney when she was sacked by Dolores Umbridge.

PROFESSOR FILIUS FLITWICK
Charm's teacher at Hogwarts a former duelling champion who moved on to the far more exciting and dangerous career of teaching adolescents to handle supernatural forces.

PROFESSOR WILHENMINA GRUBBY-PLANK
The professor takes over the Care of Magical creatures when Hagrid is indisposed, for Harry's first lesson after the Yule ball, she presents them with a unicorn, and tells them that unicorns prefer a woman's touch, Unicorns can only be handled "easily" by 'innocent' girls

PROFESSOR RUBEUS HAGRID
The near-giant-sized Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. Hagrid is a former student of Hogwarts who was expelled for unleashing the monster that killed a girl in the of Tom Riddle (With the help of Ron and Hermione Harry proves that he is innocent His pet spider was forced to hide in the Forbidden Forest see Aragog. He is in his 60's. Ms. Rowling says that if you were Hagrid in old English you were having a bad night. She says that Hagrid is a big drinker and often has his own bad nights. Rubeus can mean red or jewel.

MADAM HOOCH
Head of Quidditch at Hogwarts teaches first-years how to fly on broomsticks. Hooch is an illicit distilled drink, and also a 'call' in Scottish Highland dancing

PROFESSOR IGOR KARKAROFF
Karkaroff has a fruity, unctuous voice; he was tall and thin like Dumbledore, but his white hair was short, and his goatee (finishing in a small curl) did not entirely hide his rather weak chin. The Durmstrang Institute headmaster, a former death eater, now on the run from Lord Voldemort.

PROFESSOR KETTLEBURN
Taught Care of Magical Creatures prior to Hagrid He retired to enjoy time with the few limbs that he had left

PROFESSOR GILDEROY LOKHART
Defence Against the Dark Arts in Harry's second year and five-time winner of Witch Weekly's Most-Charming Smile Award author of self-glorifying autobiographies that consist of him taking the credit for what others have done. Gilderoy was also the name of a famous highwayman of ballad fame who was reputedly handsome. Lockhart is an Australian town near Wagga Wagga

PROFESSOR REMUS J LUPIN
A werewolf. DAtDA teacher during Harry's third year and friend to James Sirius and Peter. Remus and his brother Romulus were twins raised by wolves that supposedly founded Rome. (Roman mythology) The people of Normandy and France call werewolves Lupin (or Loup-Garou). lupine means wolf-like. Lupus the wolf is a constellation in the Southern Hemisphere.

MADAME OLYMPIA MAXIME
Half-giant headmistress at Beauxbatons. Olympian can mean surpassing all others in scope. Mount Olympus is the largest mountain in Greece and supposedly the home of the gods. Maxima is Latin for greatest. There's also a bilingual pun in her name. Maxime is French for principle and Madame Maxime is the principal of Beauxbatons. Hagrid mispronounces her name, as he does with most words, calling her 'Olympe'

PROFESSOR GRISELDA MARCHBANKS
One of the examiners who came to Hogwarts when Harry was taking his Astronomy O.W.L. exam, She was the head of the Wizarding Examinations Authority, and an elder of the Wizengamot until resigning in protest at the introduction of the High Inquisitor

PROFESSOR MINERVA MCGONAGALL
A strict leader of Gryffindor house professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts and at seventy years of age she is quite young to be the assistant Headmistress at Hogwarts. She is also an Animagus, of the cat variety. Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom, medicine, the arts, dyeing, science, and trade and war. As Minerva Medica she is the patroness of physicians. Minerva is believed to be the inventor of numbers and musical instruments. She was equated with the Greek Athena. (From Encyclopaedia Mythica)

PROFESSOR MAD-EYE(ALASTOR) MOODY
Slightly mad ex-Auror DADA teacher during Harry's 4th year. Hired to teach Defence against the dark arts but was kidnapped and imprisoned in his own trunk, his place taken by a death eater the late Bartemius Crouch Jr. Alastor means avenger. In Greek mythology Alastor is an avenging demon associated with blood feuds between families and the Greek term for an avenging power that visits the sins of the fathers on their children. It is also an evil genius of a house that leads a man to commit crimes and sin. He was originally a mortal the son of Neleus king of Pylos. He became a (minor) demon when he and his brothers were slain by Heracles. (Encyclopaedia Mythica) Alastor was the name of a demon that executed court decrees in Hell which is rather appropriate in comparison with Mad-Eye since he could be seen carrying out Ministry decrees by capturing or killing Death Eaters.

The Hogwarts School Librarian, French for pinch

POPPY POMFREY
Hogwarts matron (nurse) The poppy is one of the oldest medicinal plants a flowering plant with large red, orange or white blossoms. The narcotic opium is extracted from one of the varieties, the opium poppy. Her name is most likely derived from comfrey a medicinal plant.

PROFESSOR SLATERO QUIRREL
DADA teacher and servant to Lord Voldemort Quirrel is just one letter away from being squirrel and both share a twitchy and nervous sort of persona. Also a quarrel is an argument.

PROFESSOR SINISTRA
Teacher of Astronomy at Hogwarts Her lessons are given every Wednesday at midnight on top of the highest tower.

PROFESSOR SEVERUS SNAPE
Potions teacher and head of Slytherin house. In Potions the students learn how to make potions such as enlarging potions bubbling potions etc Supposedly Jo made the Potions master the enemy because she didn't like a Chemistry teacher she once had. Snape is a small town Jo once visited. The word snape actually has a meaning beyond simply being a place-name (in that context it means a boggy patch of ground). To snipe someone means to rebuke or hurt them and a snape is a rebuke.

PROFESSOR SPROUT
Professor of Herbology (plants) at Hogwarts and head of Hufflepuff houses; a sprout is a small or baby plant

PROFESSOR TOFTY
Griselda Marchbanks's assistant in performing O.W.L. exams.

PROFESSOR SIBYL PATRICIA TRELAWNEY
The divination professor at Hogwarts; obsessed with dark predictions and death predictions. Hermione gets fed up with her and leaves her class. Ron and Harry think she is crazy. A Sybil was any woman inspired with prophetic power by the god Apollo. The sibyls lived in caves or near streams and prophesied in a frenzied trance usually in Greek hexameters, which were handed down in writing.

PROFESSOR DOLORES JANE UMBRIDGE

DADA teacher in Harry's 5th year. Dolores is a spanish word meaning pains. Umbridge is a homonym of Umbrage (n) a feeling of pique or resentment at some often fancied slight or insult. Also, umbra means shadow.
